About VirtualBox: Oracle VM VirtualBox is a general-purpose full virtualizer for x86 hardware that originally created by German software company innotek GmbH, purchased by Sun Microsystems, and now developed by Oracle as part of its family of virtualization products.
It is installed on an existing host operating system; within this application, additional guest operating systems, each known as a Guest OS, can be loaded and run, each with its own virtual environment.
Targeted at server, desktop and embedded use, it is now the only professional-quality virtualization solution that is also Open Source Software.

1-1. Features of VirtualBox:

• Modularity. VirtualBox has an extremely modular design with well-defined internal programming interfaces and a client/server design. This makes it easy to control it from several interfaces at once: for example, you can start a virtual machine in a typical virtual machine GUI and then control that machine from the command line, or possibly remotely. VirtualBox also comes with a full Software Development Kit: even though it is Open Source Software, you don't have to hack the source to write a new interface for VirtualBox.


• Virtual machine descriptions in XML. The configuration settings of virtual machines are stored entirely in XML and are independent of the local machines. Virtual machine definitions can therefore easily be ported to other computers.


• Guest Additions for Windows, Linux and Solaris. VirtualBox has special software that can be installed inside Windows, Linux and Solaris virtual machines to improve performance and make integration much more seamless. Among the features provided by these Guest Additions are mouse pointer integration and arbitrary screen solutions (e.g. by resizing the guest window). There are also guest additions for OS/2 with somewhat reduced functionality.


• Shared folders. Like many other virtualization solutions, for easy data exchange between hosts and guests, VirtualBox allows for declaring certain host directories as "shared folders", which can then be accessed from within virtual machines.

A number of extra features are available with the full VirtualBox release only (see the "Editions" page for details):

• Virtual USB Controllers. VirtualBox implements a virtual USB controller and allows you to connect arbitrary USB devices to your virtual machines without having to install device specific drivers on the host.


• Remote Desktop Protocol. Unlike any other virtualization software, VirtualBox fully supports the standard Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). A virtual machine can act as an RDP server, allowing you to "run" the virtual machine remotely on some thin client that merely displays the RDP data.


• USB over RDP. With this unique feature, a virtual machine that acts as an RDP server can still access arbitrary USB devices that are connected on the RDP client. This way, a powerful server machine can virtualize a lot of thin clients that merely need to display RDP data and have USB devices plugged in.

1-2. Hardware Requirements:

　 In order to run VirtualBox on your machine, you need the following:

• Reasonably powerful x86 hardware. Any recent Intel or AMD processor should do.


• Memory. Depending on what guest operating systems you want to run, you will need at least 512 MB of RAM (but probably more, and the more the better).
  Basically, you will need whatever your host operating system needs to run comfortably, plus the amount that the guest operating system needs.
  So, if you want to run Windows XP on Windows XP, you probably won't enjoy the experience much with less than 1 GB of RAM.
  If you want to try out Windows Vista in a guest, it will refuse to install if it is given less than 512 MB RAM, so you'll need that for the guest alone, plus the memory your operating system normally needs.


• Hard disk space. While VirtualBox itself is very lean (a typical installation will only need about 30 MB of hard disk space), the virtual machines will require fairly huge files on disk to represent their own hard disk storage.
  So, to install Windows XP, for example, you will need a file that will easily grow to several GB in size.


• A supported host operating system. Presently, we support Windows (primarily XP) and many Linux distributions on 32-bit hosts and on 64-bit hosts. Support for Mac OS X and Solaris and OpenSolaris appeared in 1.6.


• A supported guest operating system. Besides the "user manual", up-to-date information is available at "Status: Guest OSes".

Mixed installations (e.g. Debian/Lenny ships an AMD64 kernel with 32-bit packages) are not supported. To install VirtualBox anyway you need to setup a 64-bit chroot environment.

You might want to compare the MD5 SUMS to verify the integrity of downloaded packages.

Note: Ubuntu users might want to install the dkms package (not available on Debian) to ensure that the VirtualBox host kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt and vboxnetadp) are properly updated if the linux kernel version changes during the next apt-get upgrade.
The dkms package can be installed through the Synaptic Package manager or through the following command:

 $ sudo apt-get install dkms

Note: about VirtualBox 3.2.0 Beta2:

宍道湖のしじみ

宍道湖のしじみは、大和しじみという種類です。大和しじみは、汽水湖で育ちます。
淡水で育つしじみは「真シジミ」、琵琶湖で育つしじみは「セタシジミ」、汽水湖で育つしじみは「大和しじみ」と、水質によって育つしじみは違います。

OpenSolaris はどうなるの？

当初は OpenSolaris 2010.03 として 2010年3月26日にリーリスされるということであった。
OpenSolaris の次のバージョンのリリースについて Oracle から公式のアナウンスが全くないことに、OpenSolaris community の間にフラストレーションが高まっている。

先日開催された Tech Days 2010, St. Petersburg, Russia April 8-9, 2010 で、Dan Roberts (Director of Solaris Product Management) のプレゼンテーション "Oracle Solaris and Oracle Virtualization”の中で ２３ページと２４ページで OpenSolaris の今後について言及している。

次のアップデート版は 2010年第一半期（６月まで？）にリリースされる。

オープンソースの新フォント「IPAexフォント」

IPAがオープンソースの新フォント「IPAexフォント」を公開:
情報処理推進機構（IPA）は2010年2月26日、オープンソースフォント「IPAフォント」の新シリーズ「IPAexフォント（アイピーエーイーエックス フォント）」を公開した。また同時に、従来版IPAフォントでも、不具合を修正したバージョンアップ版を公開した。ともにIPAのWebサイトやSourceForge.JP内のプロジェクトページから無償ダウンロードできる。

「従来のIPAフォントは、過去のシステムとの互換性の観点から、固定幅と変動幅のフォントを分離していた。しかし、一般的な日本語の慣例に従った文書を作成する場合、欧文文字の部分には変動幅の『IPA P明朝』、和文文字の部分には固定幅の『IPA明朝』、といった使い分けを、一つの文書の中で行う必要があった。IPAexフォントは、固定幅と変動幅を一つのフォントに統合することで、このようなわずらわしさの解消を狙った」（IPA）。

IPAフォントの新版Ver.003.02では、利用者から指摘があった不具合の修正をするとともに、欧文と数字の判別が容易となるように、文字のデザインなどを修正した。

　ユーザーは、誘導に従ってアップデートを導入してもいいし、このリマインダを後回しにしてもいい。リマインダを完全に表示しなくすることも可能だ。しかし、これによって、リマインダが今後2度と表示されなくなるわけではないようだ。Firefox 3.0.xに安定性およびセキュリティに関するパッチが提供されるのは、2010年1月までとなっている。従って、アップデートを促す取り組みは、今後も続く可能性が高い。

　Mozillaは、バージョン3.5ではパフォーマンスが改善されているほか、ウェブアプリケーションを実行する土台としてのFirefoxを向上させるさまざまな機能も追加されていると述べている。しかし、ユーザーにアップグレードを実行させるのは、ときとして厄介な問題になる。アップグレードに伴う普遍的な煩わしさを別にすると、Firefoxのアップグレードを妨げる最大の要因の1つは、新バージョンの導入によってFirefoxの拡張機能が使えなくなるという事態がたびたび起きることだ。

　ただし、Mozillaによれば、現在では90％以上のFirefoxアドオンがFirefox 3.5をサポートしているという。その一方で、Mozillaのプログラマーは、「Namoroka」というコードネームの「Firefox 3.6」に取り組んでいる。

　ブラウザのアップグレードは、慎重を要する問題だ。Microsoftは、8年前の製品である「Internet Explorer 6」のユーザーに何とか最新版にアップグレードしてもらおうと努力している。これとは対照的に、より新しいGoogleの「Chrome」ブラウザは、ユーザーが何もしなくても自動的に最新バージョンにアップデートされる。ただし、IT管理者はこうした挙動を抑制することが可能だ。

Firefox 3.5 is released for All Platforms

Firefox 3.5 on Tuesday June-30-2009, the final version was released.
If you've been using the Firefox 3.5beta or Release Candidate, you now get to upgrade to the final release for Firefox 3.5.  It's available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and SunOS. This new features are from here.

So, ASAP, Firefox 3.5 for OpenSolaris has been installed on my notebook computer and setting as the default web browser. Then the previously installed Firefox 3.5RC2 was uninstalled.

4.  日本語フォントパックのインストール
日本語フォントパックをここからダウンロードする。日本語文書を適切に表示するためのパッケージなのだそうだ。

5. Adobe Reader 9.1.2 の起動
メニューアイコンをクリックするか、端末を開いて、次のコマンドを与えて起動する。
  $ acroread
起動画面は Fig-01.
また、編集(E) → 環境設定(N) 画面を開いて適宜設定する。
インターネット 項目で、規定のブラウザを設定し、ブラウザの実行ファイルと libgtkembedmoz フォルダが適切に設定されていることを確認する。
問題があれば修正する。 Fig-02.

Firefox3.5 RC2 がリリースされている。６月末には Firefox 3.5 最終版が正式にリリースされる予定だそうだ。
Windows, Mac OS X, Linux の各OSおよび各国言語対応版のダウンロードはここから。

1. Download and Install Firefox 3.5 RC2 for OpenSolaris 2009.06
例によって、早速 OpenSolaris 対応 RC2版(en-US)の tar-ball をダウンロードして、My NoteBook にインストールしてみた。
インストールは　Firefox 3.5 beta4 と同様の手順でおこなう。

2. Japanese Language Pack (JLP)
日本語に対応させるため JLP-xpi エクステンションをここからダウンロードして、インストールする。ここで注意することは、必ずインストールした Firefox バージョンに対応したものを選択してインストールしなければならない。
多言語に対応しているので、様々な国の言語を選択して使用することができる。

3. Install adddon: Locale Switcher
さらにメニューなどを日本語表示させるためにはいくつかの方法があるようだが、簡単に対応できるアドオン： Locale Switcher をインストールする。このアドオンをインストールすると Firefoxのメニューから簡単に Locale を切り替えることができるので重宝している。

4. Firefox plugins

Firefox プラグインは　/usr/lib/Firefox-3.5rc2/plugins 以下に記述されたものが反映される。

Fans of Firefox's beta builds can now download Firefox 3.5 Release Candidate 2 for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
The latest build contains bug fixes although, according to Mozilla's Director of Firefox, Mike Beltzner, these were minor stability issues corrected after the release of the first release candidate.

Belzner also addressed some confusion among the 800,000 or so beta users about Firefox's beta-naming conventions.
When the beta moves into release candidate mode, he said, it takes on the name of the final version because if no further problems are found the RC build will simply become the public version.

In an interview with CNET earlier this week, Beltzner said that he expects Firefox 3.5 to be released to the public before the end of June. Although that gives Mozilla a week and a half from today, releasing two release candidates in one week could indicate that the final version could come as early as the beginning of next week.

If you've been using the Firefox 3.5 beta, you now get to upgrade to the release candidate for Firefox 3.5. Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, The noticeable changes to the release candidate from beta 4 and the b99 pre-release version are not readily apparent. Generally, you can expect the release candidate to be more stable than its beta predecessors, although if you're using an add-on such as Nightly Tester Tools or MR Tech to force incompatible add-ons to work in the beta you may be compromising your stability somewhat.
