Quoted Issue: How To Install Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1 (Final) In Ubuntu:

"Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1 was just released featuring faster search, quick filter toolbar, better migration assistant and many other improvements. A complete list of what's new can be found @ Mozilla's website.

There is no PPA for Ubuntu providing the latest Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1 for now and there are no plans to push an update in the existing Ubuntu versions (that means Lucid too) like it happened with Firefox so the only way to install it is manually, or by using Ubuntuzilla (it works with any Ubuntu version).

So to install Thunderbird 3.1 in Ubuntu, firstly install Ubuntuzilla. You can download a .deb file from HERE.

Once Ubuntuzilla is installed successfully, to install Thunderbird 3.1, all you have to do is run the following command in a terminal:
ubuntuzilla.py -a install -p thunderbird
During the installation, Ubuntuzilla will ask you to choose the localization you want to install, so it will install Thunderbird 3.1 in your language!

If you used the manual method to install Thunderbird 3.1 we were telling you about not so long ago, then all you have to do is select 'Check for updates' from the Thunderbird About menu."

Thunderbird 3.0.5 がリリースされた。早速、OpenSolaris dev. b134 にインストール済みの Thunderbird 3.0.4 を 3.0.5 にアップデートする。

【Thunderbird 3.0.5】リリース。
本バージョンではメッセージインデックスに関するパフォーマンスの改良やUIのフィックスなどがなされており、Windows版の現行版を使っていればヘルプメニューからのアップデートが可能となっている。

Thunderbird 3.1 のリリースも近いようだが、現行版を使っている方はアップデートするとよいでせう。

Thunderbird 3.0.5での主な変更点:

■メッセージインデックスに関するパフォーマンスの向上
■Mac OS X における未読メッセージ通知の改良
■UI に関するいくつかのフィックス
■その他改良されたバグ一覧

OpenSolaris dev. b134 にインストール済みの Thunderbird 3.0.4 を 3.0.5 にアップデートする。

1. OpenSolaqris 用 tarball - i386 のダウンロード:

1-1. tarball と md5sum ファイルをダウンロードする。$HOME のダウンロードディレクトリに移動して、

1-2. 日本語パック(JLP) のダウンロード: /linux-i686/xpi に移動して ja.xpi をダウンロードする。

2. 展開・インストール:

$ pfexec su -
# tar xvfj thunderbird-3.0.5.en-US.opensolaris-i386.tar.bz2
# mv thunderbird /usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.5
# exit

3. 起動ファイルの作成:

$ pfexec ln -s /usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.5/thunderbird /usr/bin/thunderbird305

4.アプリケーションメニュー用のスクリプトの編集:

$ cd /usr/share/applications
$ pfexec vi thunderbird-305.desktop

5. Thunderbird の起動:

アプリケーションメニュー → インターネット → Thunderbird 3.0.5 メール/カレンダーを選択して起動するか、端末を開いてコマンドラインで、

$ thunderbird305 -P & (ここで、-P オプションを与えて ProfileManager を起動する)

Thunderbird 3.0.5 用のプロファイルを作成して、起動時にそれを選択する。

6. メニューなどを日本語表示にする。

6-1. ダウンロードした JLP - ja.xpi をインストールする。

Thunderbird の Toolsメニューにある Add-ons / Extensions を選び、Extensions ウィンドウを開く。
そして Install ボタンを押し、ローカルにダウンロードした JLP: ja.xpi を選択する。
下図は、インストールされた Thunderbird 3.0.5 対応 JLP。

6-2. Thunderbird の言語設定を「ja-JP」に変更する。

方法-1. : Thunderbirdのインストール先: /usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.5/defaults/pref/all-l10n.js をテキストエディタなどで開き、以下のように「general.useragent.locale」の設定値を「ja-JP」に変更する。

方法-2. : Thunderbird のTools メニューにある Options を選び、Options ウィンドウを開く。
Advanced にある General タブを選び、Config Editor ボタンを押してabout:config ウィンドウを開く。
そして「general.useragent.locale」の設定値を「ja-JP」に変更する。

6-3. Thunderbird を再起動すると、設定が反映されてメニューなどが日本語表示される。
